Rapid Dental Response

What is a Dental Emergency?

Dental emergencies can happen to anyone. From a painful toothache to a broken tooth, we all have times where life throws in a surprise. Dental emergencies take place due to accidents, which can lead to broken or chipped teeth or knocking a tooth out. Sometimes previous dental work fails because of age or practices like chewing ice.

If you break your jaw or have a deep wound, a visit to the hospital emergency department is in order, however not all accidents require an ED visit. When you have a dental emergency, our team at My Dental in Alderley, Brisbane is here to help. If you cannot get in for a few hours, we offer some help on what you can do to care for yourself until you can get in to see us.

My first time going there in a such a long time and thanks to all stuff I had the best experience. Everything went well and an everyone was amazing. Thank you everyone for doing amazing job. Keep up the best work.

First Step Care for Dental Emergencies

When you experience any of the following dental emergencies, call our office in Alderley, Brisbane and schedule an appointment. Please let reception know it is an emergency so we can schedule you accordingly. The following are some things you can do to help yourself while you are waiting for your appointment.

\

Toothache

When a cavity or decay is left undetected, it can lead to pain in the tooth root, causing a toothache. Sometimes this is not an emergency as the pain can be alleviated with over-the-counter medications until you can come in. But other times, the pain may be so much that medications don’t help, or the pain is accompanied by swelling or even fever.

No matter which is the case, treatment is necessary to prevent the spread of decay and avoid tooth loss or worse. Call and schedule an emergency appointment with us, then take steps to alleviate pain and calm bacteria growth with the following:

  • Rinse with warm salt water to help diminish bacteria and bring relief
  • Use a cold compress on your cheek for swelling and pain relief
\

Wedged Object

Sometimes a bit of food or other matter might become stuck between teeth. If dental floss or a dental pick cannot remove it, you may experience pain while it weakens the integrity of the tooth. Schedule an emergency appointment with us and try periodic rinsing with warm salt water and gentle brushing. Sometimes taking over-the-counter pain medication can not only relieve pain, but reduce swelling, making it easier to remove the object.

\

Tooth or Gum Abscess

An abscess is an infection filled bubble, bump or pocket in the gumline, either below a tooth or between teeth. The infection does need to be dealt with before it spreads into the tooth root, surrounding teeth or beyond the mouth. Over-the-counter pain medications may provide relief, as well as tepid saltwater rinses every few hours and an ice pack to the face, in the area of the abscess.

\

Chipped or Cracked Tooth

A tooth can become chipped or cracked due to an accident or old dental work, which weakens the tooth. If it is painful, call and let us know you would like to schedule an emergency visit. If it is not painful, let us know when you call so we can schedule accordingly. Then be proactive by rinsing with tepid saltwater to keep bacteria away. If you have pain, over-the-counter medications along with a cold compress to the facial area may help before you visit us.

\

Broken Tooth

If you’re suffering from a broken or chipped tooth, or a lost filling but are only experiencing minimal pain, then it is recommended you see your dentist within about a week from the incident occurring. You can usually relieve this intermittent pain with over-the-counter medication. Additionally, placing a cold compress on the face next to the injured tooth may reduce swelling and discomfort. Call and schedule an emergency appointment with us and we will accommodate as soon as we can.

\

Knocked-Out Tooth

Accidents can sometimes knock teeth out. If you do not have to visit the ED, then we may be able to save your tooth by replacing it back in the socket. Call us within 30 minutes of losing your tooth (or as soon as possible) and tell reception what happened. Place the tooth in warm water or warm full-fat milk and bring it to us. If you do not have access to water or milk, wrap the tooth in clean material or plastic wrap for transport.
