What is Sleep Apnoea?
The other two types of sleep apnoea are central and mixed. Central apnoea is when the brain fails to send proper signals to the muscles to breathe, while mixed apnoea is a mixture of obstructive and central. OSA is by far the most common type of sleep apnoea, and fortunately something that our skilled dentists at My Dentist in Alderley can help with.
Signs of Sleep Apnoea
Usually reported by others, obstructed airflow can cause snoring, gasping and choking for air. Episodes may take place up to 100 times per hour, but the afflicted person will only awaken for a few seconds before falling back to sleep, so may remain unaware of the condition for years. While the disorder affects mostly males over 40, it can affect anyone and should be addressed. The following are common signs that one may have this condition:
Sleep Apnoea Risks and Problems
Fatigue is the most common problem associated with this disorder, however, the risks that are posed if left untreated can become larger health problems. These include:
Damaged teeth due to grinding
Chronic sore throat
Headaches
Memory problems
High blood pressure
Cardiovascular disease
Metabolic issues like diabetes
Lifestyle Changes
Sometimes sleep apnoea can be addressed through healthy lifestyle changes. Smoking and alcohol use both increase the risk for this condition, so stopping or at least limiting these activities can result in a deeper sleep and better health. Excess weight and obesity are also risk factors as extra body weight may put pressure on the upper airways. At the same time, fatty deposits may contribute to decreased lung volume and neuromuscular control, which further obstructs breathing. In this case, a healthy diet may be recommended as part of treatment to help bring the condition under control.
Sleep Apnoea Treatment
At My Dentist, you are in good hands with Dr Kat Marhfour, who is a member of the Australasian Sleep Association and is particularly skilled to help those with sleep apnoea. She is passionate about helping all patients and will ensure you receive individual and expert treatment to overcome this condition.
Sleep apnoea treatment is possible and depends upon the reason behind the condition. A dental examination will help us understand how your jaw is aligned, because improper jaw alignment may result in sleep apnoea. If the jaw recedes too far or is a result of crooked teeth, then addressing these issues with braces or Invisalign may help.
Sometimes the condition may be treated with a CPAP machine, which stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. The main unit is a pump to control airflow with a tube and mask that is worn to transport a steady flow of oxygen into the patient. In many cases, less invasive appliances are sufficient. We provide the following devices to help our patients with mild to moderate sleep apnoea.
SomnoDent®
Is a clinically proven and safe oral device that helps patients who suffer from sleep apnoea. The device uses a mouthpiece that is customized to suit your mouth size, teeth and bite. It works by gently prompting the lower jaw to remain in a slightly forward position, which promotes proper airflow. With a variety of devices to choose from, our skilled dentist will choose the best one for your situation and adjust it to comfort so you can sleep soundly.
Oventus O2Vent
Works well for those with nasal obstruction whether it is due to the collapse of nasal soft tissue or other blockages. The device is a solution for those who find it difficult to use other types of mouthpieces, and allows a slight airway passage through the mouth. Patients can then breathe through their nose or mouth without worry, as the airflow bypasses common obstruction sites like the tongue and soft palate.
