Empathetic Dentistry

Helping Anxious Patients

At My Dentist, our caring team understand that visiting the dentist may be a nerve-wrecking experience for some patients. Because we offer personalised and one-on-one care, we can recognise when a patient may be suffering from heightened anxiety or dental phobia.

We never want this fear to prevent a patient from seeking the dental care they require, nor should it negatively impact their oral health and hygiene. This is why we have a number of pain management and sedation methods on-hand. Additionally, we’re always here to offer reassurance, kindness, and the highest quality of care that you would expect from a reputable dental practice.

Our various sedation methods allow us to perform dental procedures whilst the patient is in a highly relaxed or sedative state, helping them to feel comfortable and pain-free during treatment. Additionally, it also helps the patient to undergo procedures without feeling overwhelmingly stressed or anxious, therefore helping them to have a positive experience whilst seeking dental care.

Our highly-trained team are qualified to administer inhalation sedation (happy gas) and IV sedation in-house, depending on the level of sedation required. This also means that more complex procedures or surgeries can be carried out in the comfort of our own practice, rather than making the patient visit off-site locations for treatment.

IV sedation (also known as sleep dentistry) is one of the most advanced forms of sedation available. It involves administering a combination of sedative and pain management drugs intravenously (i.e. into the bloodstream). Happy gas, on the other hand, is inhaled through a mask placed gently over the mouth and nose. It causes the patient to become extremely relaxed, yet still fully conscious.

I had such an amazing experience, all the staff were so kind, lovely and gentle. I highly recommend this dentist!

Often Asked Queries

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer IV sedation?

Yes! We’re proud to offer what’s known as ‘Sleep Dentistry’, which calms anxious patients and puts you in a deep state of relaxation, though you’ll still be conscious. You may feel like you’re sleeping, drifting in and out of a dream-like state throughout the treatment. Our patients describe it as incredibly pleasant.

What are the benefits of Sleep Dentistry/IV sedation?

This type of solution works very quickly, and you will feel like the treatment takes just a few minutes while in your relaxed, dream-like state. You also won’t experience any pain or nervousness, making your visit with us stress free.

Can I have complex work done with IV sedation?

Yes! You can elect to have IV sedation for things like dental implants, denture procedures, veneers, restorations, root canals and more.

How should I prepare for IV sedation?

We ask you not to eat for at least six hours before your visit, and that you do not smoke prior to sedation. You’ll also want to make sure you have a friend or loved one who can drive you home from your appointment.

Who performs the process?

We work with an ANZCA anaesthetist.

Are there rebates available?

Each session of IV sedation attracts a medicare rebate, which can help to covers a large portion of the IV sedation fee.

Will my treatment be painful?

In addition to the sedative, we’ll use a local anaesthetic to numb the area that we’ll be working on. Most patients don’t feel any pain during the treatment. If you’re sore after, we may recommend over the counter pain relievers.

Does this mean I’ll be fully asleep?

During your treatment, you will not be unconscious or ‘knocked out’. You will remain awake and even able to speak, but you’ll be completely at ease and relaxed—not to mention, you won’t feel any pain.

Will I remember anything?

You likely won’t remember much—but that’s a good thing. Most of our patients remark that the procedure moved ‘extremely quick’ as the sedative can make one hour feel more like ten minutes.

Will I be groggy or tired after my treatment?

You may be tired after your treatment, but this is entirely normal and will wear off quickly. We do suggest having a friend or family member join you on your visit so they can safely drive you home.

What is the process for Nitrous Oxide sedation?

Nitrous oxide is usually delivered via a mask or nose cover. After about 20 minutes, the full effects will be achieved. Whilst the Nitrous oxide is being administered most patients feel a warm sense of calm, ease and comfort whilst being completely conscious and aware. At the end of the session we may also give you oxygen to clear out any nitrous oxide and speed up your recovery time.

Is sedation a safe option?

There are very low risks associated with sedation dentistry. We’ll also assess your candidacy with a health screen and closely monitor you the entire time.

Can children have sedation dentistry?

Yes. If you have a nervous child that you believe will benefit from sedation, we are able offer this service to them. We’ll be sure to explain everything so that there aren’t any surprises, and do our best to keep you and your little one at ease.

Will I experience any side effects?

Typically our patients do not experience side effects from undergoing sedation. You may get the hiccups, or have a dry mouth after, though both should subside relatively quickly. Most patients are able to resume their normal day-to-day activities immediately after the sedation session with no restrictions.
