Understanding Gum Disease

Gum Disease – the Quiet Culprit

Gum disease sneaks up quietly and can quickly turn into a seemingly out-of-control dental problem. Often beginning with foul breath and sometimes bleeding gums during brushing, gum disease can affect anyone, even with good oral hygiene habits.

Gingivitis and periodontitis are the gum disease that can lead to tooth loss and larger health issues and maybe hereditary or a possible effect of another underlying cause. But with proper care and intervention, you can bring your mouth back to health with the help of our experienced dentists at My Dentist in Alderley.

Signs and Symptoms

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is one of the most prominent, yet most treatable oral health issues today. It is an infection of the gums and soft tissue that can spread beyond the mouth and can result in tooth loss and jawbone deterioration. The symptoms include the following:
Bright red, sensitive gums
Swollen gums
Gums that bleed easily
Bad breath
Bad taste in the mouth
Loose teeth (lacking trauma)

I had such an amazing experience, all the staff were so kind, lovely and gentle. I highly recommend this dentist!

Early Warning Signs to Advanced Stages

Stages of Gum Disease

Gingivitis and periodontitis are the two prominent forms of gum disease. Gingivitis is less severe and early stages may be treated at home. When left untreated, it can turn to periodontitis and lead to tooth loss and need for bone grafting. The following are the different stages of gum disease:

This is a mild infection with inflammation of the gums. Gums may be sensitive and bleed from brushing, while pockets of bacteria can trap infection, making oral care and hygiene difficult. It may be reversed with consistent and thorough oral hygiene and regular dental checkups and cleaning.

Mild Periodontal Disease

This second stage infection is manageable, but may not be reversible, as the bacterial infection becomes more aggressive, leading to mild bone loss if left untreated. Dental scaling and cleaning can help remove hardened tartar and calculus that promote infection.

Moderate Periodontal Disease

Once the infection spreads to the connective tissue and bone, teeth may begin to loosen as painful pockets of infection or abscesses begin to form. This stage requires professional dental cleaning with scaling along with possible soft tissue grafting to help gums heal.

Advanced Periodontal Disease

This late-stage infection takes place when the bacterial infection has spread throughout the mouth, gums and jawbone, resulting in receding gums, bleeding, bad breath, and jawbone deterioration. This stage can be dealt with professionally, but may require tissue grafting and other advanced techniques.

Very happy with my visit. Dr Kat and the team are fantastic and made the whole experience a pleasant one.

Tailored Solutions

Periodontal Treatment for Gum Disease

Periodontal treatment is a common procedure and treatment varies according to the stage of gum disease development. If you are experiencing later stage periodontal disease, we can help stop the infection spread and help restore your oral health. The following treatments may be used:

like antibiotics are often the first step to gain control of, and stop the spread of infection. Your dentist will prescribe the type of antibiotic that suits your needs and medical history.

Root Planing

is using the dental scaling technique to remove plaque from below the gumline and to help the roots of your teeth reattach to the gums. This area requires attention because when left untreated, it can lead to the deterioration of your jawbone, as well as lost teeth. This deep cleaning treatment is for the later stage periodontitis and is even beneficial for chronic periodontitis.

Dental Cleaning and Scaling

are procedures to help remove harmful plaque and calculus from the teeth that when left unchecked, can lead to tooth loss.

This hardened form of bacteria cannot be removed with regular brushing and flossing, but professional cleaning can remove it from the teeth and below the gumline.

Empowering Recovery

After Care

Depending on the level of gum disease and periodontal treatment used, your gums will need time to heal. Some people may experience no pain at all while others require a week for sensitivity to subside. Swollen gums and tenderness are common, as healing takes place.

In some cases, the dentist will prescribe antibiotics to follow through with eliminating all infections. Some dentists may insert medication into the gumline or bacteria pockets to completely eradicate infection. A follow-up visit may be scheduled to ensure your entire mouth is healing as it should. The following are some things you can do to be proactive in your healing:

Take all medications as prescribed by your dentist
If needed, apply an ice pack to the outside of any swollen areas of the face for the first day after treatment
Rinse your mouth with tepid water if the dentist recommended
Brush lightly, according to your dentist’s instructions
Use the mouthwash your dentist recommends, if needed
Keep your follow up dental visit to ensure all is well
