Why Do Some People Never Get Cavities?
Hi, Dr Kat here from My Dentist Brisbane in Alderley.
Have you ever noticed that some people can eat sugar all day and never get a cavity, while others are constantly needing fillings?
It’s one of the most frustrating things patients tell us — that they brush, they floss, they do everything right, and they still end up back in the chair. So I wanted to explain what’s really going on, because cavities are rarely just about brushing.
Your mouth is a small ecosystem
Your oral bacteria, your saliva, how you breathe and what you eat all influence how your teeth respond to sugar and acid. Two people can have identical brushing habits and completely different outcomes, simply because the environment inside their mouths is different.
What weakens enamel
- Dry mouth and mouth breathing — saliva is your teeth’s natural defence, and without enough of it, enamel loses its protection.
- Acidic drinks — these soften enamel and leave it vulnerable.
- Ultra-processed foods — these feed the very bacteria that cause cavities.
- Some medications — many common prescriptions reduce saliva flow without patients ever being told.
- Crowded teeth — crooked or overlapping teeth simply give bacteria more places to hide.
The good news
When the environment in the mouth improves, teeth often become far more resilient to decay — almost like they’re protected. And fewer fillings? That’s a win.
